Creating a Custom & League Manager (LM) League
OVERVIEW
While both "League Manager" and "ESPN Custom" leagues can have a variable number of teams (4-20) and use customized roster and scoring settings, the similarities end there. The big difference between the two is that one is managed by the League Manager, while the other is controlled by ESPN. Here's a short overview of each:
  • League Manager - This is our traditional custom game where a "League Manager" (LM) has full commissioner controls over the league. The LM selects all league and draft settings, sends private invites to join, and most league settings can be changed at anytime. Throughout the season the LM has web-based tools to completely manage the league, e.g., edit other team rosters, change weekly schedule, adjust matchup scoring, make trades, etc. ESPN will preserve each league's history (and keepers!) from year-to-year. Note: LM leagues do not appear in the League Directory and can only be joined by private invite only.
  • ESPN Custom - New to ESPN's type of Fantasy gameplay this league type allows one individual to setup and customize a league using any combination of custom league settings. Once created the league appears in the public League Directory and can be joined by others. From this point on throughout the season all league activity is controlled by ESPN's system, with no League Manager. League settings can not be edited at any time after the league is created. Note: that ESPN Custom leagues are not leaderboard eligible and are not kept from year-to-year.
All custom leagues in Fantasy Football use a points-based, head-to-head scoring system. In this system, each team in the league faces off against one other team every week of the season (unless your plays with bye weeks). The winner of each matchups is the team that accumulates the most fantasy points determined by the weekly statistics of the players in each team's lineup and the scoring settings of your league. Weekly results are tallied into an overall record and displayed on the league's Standings page.

MAKE LEAGUE VIEWABLE TO PUBLIC
This setting is only selectable for "League Manager" leagues. If "Yes" is selected, the league will be set as Public and non-members will be able to view league pages (including League Office, Standings, Box Scores, and Team Pages) if given URLs (in emails or on message boards, for example). Note that some pages (such as the list of team owners and league message boards) are never viewable by non-members. This setting can changed at any time during the season.

LEAGUE NAME
The League Creator chooses what the league will be named. League names are limited to 32 characters and cannot contain foreign or HTML characters. League names are not unique, so there could be multiple leagues with the same name. "ESPN Custom" league names may not be changed once the league has been created. "League Manager" league names can be edited by the LM at any time during the season via the "Edit League Settings" tool.

SCORING SETTINGS
When creating a custom league (ESPN Custom or League Manager) you can choose many different scoring options. Our default settings will be pre-selected and these can be edited by clicking on the "SCORING" link. On this page all the available stat categories and their corresponding point values can be edited to create your league's unique scoring system.

In "League Manager" leagues the scoring settings can be changed by the LM at any time during the season. If any are changed, the system will automatically adjust any and all previous game results to match the edited settings. Note: If any settings are changed the action will be listed in your league's Transaction Log page.

In "ESPN Custom" leagues the scoring settings are fixed upon league creation and can NOT be edited at any point after this time.

Below is a list of all available scoring options for custom leagues in ESPN Fantasy Football. The numbers displayed in the brackets, i.e. <1, 5, 10>, show the available buckets to be selected. Decimal values are allowed to the nearest tenth of a point (i.e., 1.4 or -6.3, NOT 2.34) for each category.

NUMBER OF TEAMS IN THE LEAGUE (ESPN Custom and League Manager)
The number of teams in a custom league can be set from 4 - 20.

NOTE: If the number of teams is changed the league's schedule will be adjusted.

SENDING INVITATIONS TO JOIN YOUR LEAGUE (LM Leagues only)
League Managers can access the "Owner Info and Send Invites" page by clicking on the Members link from the League Office. Enter the email address of each person you want to join your league (as seen in the screenshot below):

EDITING/ADDING/DELETING TEAM OWNERS
League Managers can also access the "LM Tools" tab and then click the "Members" link to make any changes to team owners. This includes deleting and adding second owners and sending emails to individual or multiple team owners.

TROUBLESHOOTING (League Manager leagues)
Listed below are examples of problems owners might experience joining your private league and how you can go about fixing them. If one of the examples does not help rectify your problem, please contact Customer Care at 1-888-549-ESPN between 8am and 1am EST any day of the season.

  • NO INVITATION RECEIVED
If the League Manager says they sent you an invitation but you do not see it in your email's inbox it could be due to a couple of reasons.

    1. Your email address entered by the League Manager is simply incorrect. In this case we ask you to communicate with the League Manager to ensure they are entering your correct email address.

    2. Your corporate (or ISP's) firewall blocks email from our ESPN servers. In this case we recommend the League Manager using the "Send me a copy of each invite" option. Once he/she receives the "cc'ed" email (which contains your team's unique join URL) he/she can then forward that email to you via their own email service (thus bypassing any firewall).

  • INVITATION RECEIVED; UNABLE TO JOIN LEAGUE
The League Manager invites you to play, and you receive the invite, but upon clicking the unique URL, the page returns saying you cannot join the league. This will happen for one of two reasons:

    1. The League Manager invited another owner to join the team after he/she invited you. Once a different email address is entered and submitted the system will null and void the unique URL on the previous email.

    2. The League Manager changed your email address. Likewise in the previous example, once a different email address is entered and submitted, the system will void the unique URL on the previous email. In both cases, we recommend that you contact the League Manager to work out the details.

  • NEED TO CHANGE DRAFT FROM ONE TYPE TO ANOTHER
The League Manager can change the draft type of an LM league right up until it starts. And, if it does start the LM can simply reset it and change it then. The LM would go to LM Tools, Edit Draft Settings (under the Draft Tools setting), and then select from the list of draft type options available.
