| JANUARY 31 |
Alex Smith , SF QB Archive | ESPN Content San Francisco 49ers
Probable | News: The 49ers have brought in Ted Tollner as the quarterbacks coach, in another attempt to assist in the development of Smith, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Spin: The 49ers' are very concerned, and rightfully so, regarding their quarterback position, heading into 2008. Tollner joins another offensive mind, offensive coordinator Mike Martz, in the hopes of developing some consistency at the position next season. Smith is expected to enter camp in a quarterback battle with backup Shaun Hill, provided Hill is signed this offseason.
 Thu, January 31 | |
Pacman Jones *, Ten CB Archive | ESPN Content Tennessee Titans
Out | News: Charges of disorderly conduct and public intoxication against Jones (suspension) stemming from an August 2006 incident were dismissed, the Daily News Journal reports.
Spin: This doesn't mean that Jones' off-field woes are close to over, but the embattled cornerback can at least cross this incident off the list.
 Thu, January 31 | |
| JANUARY 28 |
Jason Peters , Buf POS6 Archive | ESPN Content Buffalo Bills
Probable | News: Peters underwent successful surgery for his sports hernia last week, the Bills' official site reports.
Spin: With a typical recovery period of 8-10 weeks, Peters should have no ill effects heading into training camp.
 Mon, January 28 | |
| JANUARY 26 |
Kyle Brady , NE TE Archive | ESPN Content New England Patriots
Probable | News: Brady (foot) practiced on Friday, the Boston Herald reports.
Spin: He should be fine to play in Super Bowl XLII, although he isn't likely to catch many passes.
 Sat, January 26 | |
Dante Hall , StL WR Archive | ESPN Content St. Louis Rams
Probable | News: Hall finished 2007 with a 25.1 yard average on kick returns, a 15.1 yard average on punt returns and 27 yards on five receptions.
Spin: Hall was in and out of the line-up all year with various injuries and finished the season on the I.R. with a lingering ankle injury. What he proved was that he's still a very dangerous return threat, but what he also proved was he is very fragile. He'll likely be back in 2008 and the club's offensive special teams success will undoubtedly rely on his legs and health.
 Sat, January 26 | |
Tye Hill , StL CB Archive | ESPN Content St. Louis Rams
Probable | News: Hill, the Rams #2 cornerback, played just eight games in 2007 and finished with eight passes defensed and 34 solo tackles.
Spin: Hill suffered through back, rib and wrist injuries during the year. He's got a lot of potential but his durability has now become an issue and 2008 will undoubtedly be a make or break year for the third year pro.
 Sat, January 26 | |
| JANUARY 25 |
Bob Sanders , Ind S Archive | ESPN Content Indianapolis Colts
Probable | News: Sanders will miss the Pro Bowl due to a sore shoulder that may require surgery during the offseason, the Terre Haute News reports.
Spin: Sanders, who won the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award, should be ready for the start of training camp, but we'll monitor his progress this offseason.
 Fri, January 25 | |
Nate Kaeding , SD K Archive | ESPN Content San Diego Chargers
Probable | News: Kaeding played nearly five full games with a fractured lower left leg, the Associated Press reports.
Spin: The Chargers never mentioned the extent of Kaeding's leg injury, simply describing it as a bruise. According to this report, Kaeding's plant leg was fractured, making his four field goals in the AFC title game all the more impressive. Neither Kaeding nor the Chargers have confirmed the report.
 Fri, January 25 | |
| JANUARY 24 |
Mel Mitchell , NE S Archive | ESPN Content New England Patriots
Questionable | News: Mitchell was placed on injured reserve by New England Thursday due to a biceps injury. The move will keep him out of Super Bowl XLII against the Giants Feb. 3.
Spin: Mitchell, primarily a special teams contributor, had 11 tackles this season in 10 regular season games and one in the playoffs.
 Thu, January 24 | |
David Pollack *, Cin DE Archive | ESPN Content Cincinnati Bengals
Out | News: Pollack (neck) will decide on Feb. 8 whether he'll attempt a comeback, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Spin: Pollack has been working hard to rebuild his strength, but remains short of where he wants to be right now.
 Thu, January 24 | |
Paul Posluszny , Buf LB Archive | ESPN Content Buffalo Bills
Probable | News: Posluszny, who missed almost all of his 2007 rookie season with a broken forearm, has been given a clean bill of health, according to the Bills' official site.
Spin: Posluszny should be fine for most offseason activities and definitely the start of 2008 season. There's a good chance he'll win the starting middle linebacker job again.
 Thu, January 24 | |
| JANUARY 23 |
Philip Rivers , SD QB Archive | ESPN Content San Diego Chargers
Probable | News: Rivers underwent successful surgery on Wednesday to repair the torn ACL in his right knee, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Spin: He's facing a significant amount of rehab (between four and six months), while he could be limited during training camp if he progresses towards the longer end of that timetable. Given the timing, you'll definitely want to circle back and take another look at his health before drafting in August.
 Wed, January 23 | |
Channing Crowder , Mia LB Archive | ESPN Content Miami Dolphins
Questionable | News: Crowder (knee) is apparently OK after crashing his truck into a palm tree on a Florida highway early Wednesday morning, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports.
Spin: Crowder abandoned the truck after crashing some time around 5:30 AM, citing that he didn't want to wait in the rain for police to come if he reported the incident. At this point, no DUI-related charges have been filed and it appears that Crowder will only face a second-degree misdemeanor for leaving the scene of a crash involving property damage.
 Wed, January 23 | |
| JANUARY 22 |
Terry Glenn , Dal WR Archive | ESPN Content Dallas Cowboys
Probable | News: Glenn will need microfracture surgery on his knee over the offseason, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Spin: The knee caused Glenn to miss 15 games in 2007, and the surgery could be a career-ender for the 34-year-old to-be. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he would meet with Glenn to discuss his future after the surgery.
 Tue, January 22 | |
| JANUARY 21 |
Peerless Price , Buf WR Archive | ESPN Content Buffalo Bills
Questionable | News: Price started just four games this season before undergoing season-ending neck surgery, posting seven receptions for 68 yards and no scores. His absence forced either Josh Reed or Roscoe Parrish to split out wide and move out of the slot where they are most productive, the Buffalo News reports.
Spin: Losing Price had a ripple effect that crippled Buffalo's already shaky passing attack. He hopes to be healed in time to participate in the start of offseason workouts, but his starting job may not be there waiting for him should Buffalo decide to bring in a more consistent complement to Lee Evans.
 Mon, January 21 | |
Tony Hargrove *, Buf DE Archive | ESPN Content Buffalo Bills
Out | News: The NFL has suspended Hargrove without pay for the 2008 season for violating the league's substance abuse policy, The Buffalo News reports. He served a four-game ban at the beginning of the season for a different violation.
Spin: Three strikes and you're in big trouble with the league, and Hargrove hit that dreaded level. He was scheduled to become a free agent in March, and based on the mildly productive time he did see with the Bills could've been in line for a nice little payday. It looks like he just cost himself some decent cash.
 Mon, January 21 | |
George Wilson , Buf WR Archive | ESPN Content Buffalo Bills
Probable | News: Wilson (ribs) ended the year on injured reserve, finishing with 37 tackles and two interceptions.
Spin: Wilson looked good in his first year as a safety (he transitioned from wide receiver), but fell victim to a nasty Buffalo injury bug that seemed to land at least one Bill on injured reserve every week. With his athleticism, he seems to be a strong candidate to reclaim a starting role next season.
 Mon, January 21 | |
Derek Schouman , Buf RB Archive | ESPN Content Buffalo Bills
Probable | News: Schouman, who began the year on the practice squad, was promoted to the active roster in Week 7. He managed three catches for 19 yards before landing on injured reserve with an ankle sprain.
Spin: Schouman's ankle won't limit his participation in any offseason activities, but he will need to show some improvement in camp in order to make the 2008 roster.
 Mon, January 21 | |
| JANUARY 20 |
Ryan Denney , Buf DE Archive | ESPN Content Buffalo Bills
Probable | News: Foot injuries limited Denney to just seven games this season. He finished the year with 27 total tackles and a sack.
Spin: Denney broke his foot in training camp and missed the first seven games of the year. He played adequately after his return, but often sat out practice to rest his foot and went on injured reserve once the Bills were eliminated from playoff contention. A second foot surgery in December should hopefully have Denney's foot as healthy as possible for the start of Buffalo's offseason activities this spring.
 Sun, January 20 | |
Antonio Gates , SD TE Archive | ESPN Content San Diego Chargers
Questionable | News: Gates (toe) is not among the Chargers' inactives for Sunday's AFC Championship Game, the Boston Globe reports.
Spin: Gates' toe is reportedly still very sore, but given the importance of Sunday's game, it's not surprising that he will give his team all he can, for as long as he can give it.
 Sun, January 20 | |
| JANUARY 18 |
Deion Branch *, Sea WR Archive | ESPN Content Seattle Seahawks
Out | News: Branch, who is scheduled for ACL surgery on his left knee, could be put on the physically unable to perform list or injured reserve next season, the Tacoma News Tribune reports.
Spin: Branch's injury will take a minimum of nine months recovery, possibly longer. Best-case scenario, Branch returns late in the season next year. Any setback during his rehab, though, likely will cost him the season.
 Fri, January 18 | |
Keith Davis , Dal S Archive | ESPN Content Dallas Cowboys
Probable | News: Davis will have surgery this offseason to repair the pectoral muscle injury he sustained in Week 3, the Cowboys web site reports.
Spin: He's a free agent this offseason, and while he's a big part of the Cowboys special teams coverage units he could leave town if he gets offered a starting safety position somewhere else.
 Fri, January 18 | |
Anquan Boldin , Ari WR Archive | ESPN Content Arizona Cardinals
Probable | News: Boldin is expected to be ready well before training camp despite a fractured hip and a dislocated toe that plagued him in 2007, according to the Cardinals' official site.
Spin: Boldin will not require surgery and says that three weeks of rest are already doing wonders for his body. Boldin's 2007 stats were held in check by the injuries and could jump significantly in 2008; consider him a potential bargain.
 Fri, January 18 | |
Jason Campbell , Was QB Archive | ESPN Content Washington Redskins
Probable | News: Campbell (dislocated kneecap) said that his recovery is going well and he should be back at full strength soon, the Washington Post reports.
Spin: "I'm 85 to 90 percent," Campbell said. "At the same time, you still have to continue to rehab until you get all the strength back. You don't want to go home for the break and not be fully recovered." With plenty of time to get back to 100 percent before spring minicamps, Campbell should have a full offseason's worth of workouts to get accustomed to his new head coach's system.
 Fri, January 18 | |
Anthony Fasano , Dal TE Archive | ESPN Content Dallas Cowboys
Probable | News: Fasano had surgery on his right shoulder on Thursday, the Cowboys web site reports.
Spin: The shoulder originally bothered him in the preseason, but he played through the problem all year. Fasano ended 2007 with 10 catches for 147 yards and one TD, and will never be a big fantasy performer as long as Jason Witten is around.
 Fri, January 18 | |
Leonard Pope , Ari TE Archive | ESPN Content Arizona Cardinals
Questionable | News: Pope (right ankle) is expected to be healthy by June, according to the Cardinals' official site.
Spin: He used his size and developed into the red-zone threat that Arizona anticipated in 2007. Five of Pope's 23 catches went for touchdowns. He's worth a look in 2008, especially in touchdown-heavy leagues.
 Fri, January 18 | |
| JANUARY 17 |
Al Wallace , Buf DE Archive | ESPN Content Buffalo Bills
Probable | News: Wallace missed the entire 2007 season due to a shoulder injury.
Spin: Since Wallace was originally brought on board because of injury, there might not even be a spot open for him next season. Certainly he has very little chance to win a starting job.
 Thu, January 17 | |
Patrick Kerney , Sea DE Archive | ESPN Content Seattle Seahawks
Probable | News: Kerney (knee) will have an undisclosed surgery and miss the Pro Bowl as a result, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports.
Spin: We'll have the details as to whether it's a knee or what exactly he's getting fixed, but head coach Mike Holmgren did not mention any sort of offseason operation for Kerney during his season-ending presser. Philadelphia's Trent Cole will replace Kerney on the NFC roster.
 Thu, January 17 | |
Jason Webster , Buf CB Archive | ESPN Content Buffalo Bills
Probable | News: Webster had a tough season, playing in only one game due to a broken forearm.
Spin: Webster will be looking to bounce back next season and compete for his old starting cornerback job, though it looks like Jabari Greer and to a lesser extent Ashton Youboty may have a leg up on him following such a long absence.
 Thu, January 17 | |
Josh Reed , Buf WR Archive | ESPN Content Buffalo Bills
Probable | News: Reed (back) is on a long list of Bills players who will have or already have had offseason surgeries, The Buffalo News reports.
Spin: It bothered him down the stretch but he gutted it out and didn't miss any games in the season's final two months. Reed was just off career highs in receptions this past season (51 vs. 58 in 2003) and yards (578 vs. 588 in 2003), but unless he can start getting into the end zone consistently he remains on the outer fringes of fantasy use. We don't expect him to cross to the good side, especially with the Bills thinking of adding a big, dependable target as a No. 2 wideout opposite Lee Evans.
 Thu, January 17 | |
Robert Royal , Buf TE Archive | ESPN Content Buffalo Bills
Probable | News: Royal was scheduled for a knee scope on Thursday, according to the Bills' official site.
Spin: Just some minor offseason maintenance and Royal should be fine for next season. However, his limited value may be muted even further if the Bills end up going after a tight end in the offseason who's more of a pass-catching threat.
 Thu, January 17 | |
Chris Kelsay , Buf DE Archive | ESPN Content Buffalo Bills
Probable | News: Kelsay (ankle) is on a long list of Bills players who will have or already have had offseason surgeries, The Buffalo News reports.
Spin: It bothered him down the stretch, so with a minor procedure he should be fine for the 2008 season, where he'll be the starter at defensive end opposite Aaron Schobel again. With Ryan Denney also back as well, Kelsay will probably need to share some snaps.
 Thu, January 17 | |
Bryan Scott , Buf S Archive | ESPN Content Buffalo Bills
Probable | News: Scott (knee) is on a long list of Bills players who will have or already have had offseason surgeries, The Buffalo News reports.
Spin: It's a minor injury. The Bills liked what they got from Scott after they found themselves in a bind with all kinds of injuries this season, though the roster spots may be a little harder to come by in 2008 with all those guys ready to come back.
 Thu, January 17 | |
Angelo Crowell , Buf LB Archive | ESPN Content Buffalo Bills
Probable | News: Crowell (triceps) is on a long list of Bills players who will have or already have had offseason surgeries, The Buffalo News reports.
Spin: He should be fine for the 2008 season, where the Bills will have a nice young linebacking corps led by Crowell and followed by Paul Posluszny, John DiGiorgio, Keith Ellison and Coy Wire.
 Thu, January 17 | |
Jim Leonhard , Buf S Archive | ESPN Content Buffalo Bills
Probable | News: Leonhard (hip) is on a long list of Bills players who will have or already have had offseason surgeries, The Buffalo News reports.
Spin: He'll be fine for the 2008 season. Leonhard is coming off a breakout campaign with 54 total tackles and two picks, though those totals may come down with Ko Simpson likely to be healthy (he missed 15 games last season) and ready to resume his starting safety spot next to Donte Whitner. Leonhard is a free agent this offseason, though the Bills would probably like to bring him back as a valuable reserve.
 Thu, January 17 | |
Ko Simpson , Buf S Archive | ESPN Content Buffalo Bills
Probable | News: Simpson had a rough year, playing in only one game due to a broken left ankle.
Spin: Simpson will most likely be back in full health next season, and though the Bills got good sub play from guys like Jim Leonhard and George Wilson, Simpson would appear to be the frontrunner for the starting free safety spot again. He'll have some competition, however.
 Thu, January 17 | |
| JANUARY 16 |
Charles Woodson , GB CB Archive | ESPN Content Green Bay Packers
Probable | News: Woodson (knee) was limited during Wednesday's practice, according to the Packers' injury report.
Spin: He is likely to start Sunday's NFC Championship.
 Wed, January 16 | |
Mike Peterson , Jac LB Archive | ESPN Content Jacksonville Jaguars
Probable | News: The Jaguars may restructure Peterson's contract in the offseason, according to the Florida Times-Union.
Spin: Peterson counts for a $3 million cap hit and receives a $1.6 million roster bonus for next year, two numbers that the Jags will certainly want to reduce. Peterson has missed major portions of the last two seasons with injuries.
 Wed, January 16 | |
Marcus Stroud , Jac DT Archive | ESPN Content Jacksonville Jaguars
Probable | News: The Jaguars may restructure Stroud's contract in the offseason, according to the Florida Times-Union.
Spin: Stroud counts for $5 million against next year's salary cap, a number which the Jaguars will probably want to reduce heading into free-agency. Stroud is one of the league's best defensive tackles when healthy, but has missed major parts of the last two seasons with ankle injuries and a drug suspension.
 Wed, January 16 | |
Nick Barnett , GB LB Archive | ESPN Content Green Bay Packers
Probable | News: Barnett (hamstring) was limited during Wednesday's practice, according to the Packers' injury report.
Spin: He should be at or near 100 percent on Sunday.
 Wed, January 16 | |
Greg Jennings , GB WR Archive | ESPN Content Green Bay Packers
Probable | News: Jennings (groin) was limited during Wednesday's practice, according to the Packers' injury report.
Spin: He should be at or near 100 percent on Sunday.
 Wed, January 16 | |
Kevin Dockery , NYG CB Archive | ESPN Content New York Giants
Probable | News: Dockery (hip flexor) missed Wednesday's practice, according to the Giants' injury report.
Spin: He'll try to play on Sunday, but Dockery will need to make a lot of progress between now and then to make that a reality.
 Wed, January 16 | |
| JANUARY 15 |
Kiwaukee Thomas , Buf CB Archive | ESPN Content Buffalo Bills
Probable | News: Thomas finished the 2007 season on the IR after playing in nine games, which is a career low.
Spin: Thomas picked up his first career interception this season along with 36 tackles, but with the Bills likely keeping more members of their secondary next season, still figures to be a reserve in 2008.
 Tue, January 15 | |
| JANUARY 14 |
Javon Walker , Den WR Archive | ESPN Content Denver Broncos
Probable | News: According to Walker's good friend Darren Sharper, Walker still wants out of Denver, the Denver Post reports.
Spin: While doing television work during the Colts-Chargers playoff game, Sharper said: "He wants out of there. I know all about it, and he wants out. He's not happy. He wants the ball. He doesn't feel like he's a part of the offense." Walker said on Dec. 31 he doesn't feel like he fits in Denver anymore, but he softened his stance on a radio show last week. Sharper added he thought Walker should stay in Denver, but it doesn't appear like that will happen unless Walker takes a big pay cut.
 Mon, January 14 | |
| JANUARY 13 |
Jeremy Carter *, StL S Archive | ESPN Content St. Louis Rams
IR | News: Carter played in just five games in 2007 and recorded just two solo tackles before landing on the IR with a broken bone in his foot.
Spin: Carter remains a player the club thinks has high potential. However, it's the second straight year he finished on the IR and questions about his durability may leave him on the outside looking in come 2008.
 Sun, January 13 | |
| JANUARY 11 |
Rod Smith *, Den WR Archive | ESPN Content Denver Broncos
Out | News: Though Smith's career is likely over due to hip problems, Broncos coach Mike Shanahan would like to keep Smith on as part of the organization, the Denver Post reports.
Spin: "I'm going to try to get Rod Smith as part of this organization, doing something, because he's a guy who comes around very seldom," Shanahan said. "Hopefully we can work something out, something that he's interested in." Smith had his second surgery on the hip in 11 months earlier this week.
 Fri, January 11 | |
Ron Bartell , StL CB Archive | ESPN Content St. Louis Rams
Probable | News: Bartell underwent reconstructive surgery on his right thumb earlier this week, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Spin: The rehab process should take about three months for Bartell, and he should enter training camp at 100 percent.
 Fri, January 11 | |
Selvin Young , Den RB Archive | ESPN Content Denver Broncos
Probable | News: Young is expected to have minor surgery on his knee, the Denver Post reports.
Spin: Young sprained his knee in the second half of a Nov. 19 game against Tennessee, and although he missed just a bit of time, he continued to play and see the bulk of the carries at running back for the Broncos over the remainder of the season. This surgery isn't expected to be serious, and should have no effect on his status for next season.
 Fri, January 11 | |
| JANUARY 10 |
Hines Ward , Pit WR Archive | ESPN Content Pittsburgh Steelers
Probable | News: Ward underwent surgery to repair a partially torn meniscus in his right knee Wednesday, the Associated Press reports.
Spin: He will need about six weeks of recovery time before beginning offseason workouts, but beyond that, the procedure should not affect Ward's 2008 status.
 Thu, January 10 | |
Anthony Thomas , Buf RB Archive | ESPN Content Buffalo Bills
Questionable | News: Thomas finished the 2007 season with just 36 carries for 89 yards (2.5 average) and missed the last six games with a torn calf muscle.
Spin: He's loved by coach Dick Jauron, but everyone got a chance to see what Fred Jackson could do this season and it looks like he's passed A-Train on the depth chart for good. Jackson and rookie Dwayne Wright will probably be a bigger part of the mix next season, so it'll be interesting to see what the Bills do with the 30-year-old Thomas.
 Thu, January 10 | |
Tyjuan Hagler , Ind LB Archive | ESPN Content Indianapolis Colts
Probable | News: Hagler (toe) returned to practice on Wednesday and is expected to play this week against San Diego.
Spin: He left the final regular season game with the injury, but it wasn't seen as a serious ailment.
 Thu, January 10 | |
| JANUARY 9 |
Marvin Harrison , Ind WR Archive | ESPN Content Indianapolis Colts
Questionable | News: Harrison (knee) participated in practice again on Wednesday, the team's official web site reports. "I probably can't say without any doubt that he'll play," said head coach Tony Dungy. "I thought that he might play the last week and it didn't work out that way. He's practicing and we're planning on him starting, but we'll have to see how it goes."
Spin: Harrison participated in practice on Wednesday last week and on Monday. It looks like he'll finally play against San Diego, but it remains to be seen if he'll be at full strength.
 Wed, January 9 | |
| JANUARY 8 |
Cornelius Griffin , Was DT Archive | ESPN Content Washington Redskins
Probable | News: Griffin is expected to have arthroscopic surgery on his right knee this offseason, the Washington Post reports. Griffin had 2.5 sacks and 42 tackles this season.
Spin: Griffin was the starter this season but he was given more rest with the emergence of young interior lineman Anthony Montgomery and Kedric Goltson. The oft-injured Griffin maybe expendable this offseason.
 Tue, January 8 | |
Cato June , TB LB Archive | ESPN Content Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Probable | News: The Buccaneers finally admitted Monday that June suffered a broken foot in the team's Week 17 loss to Carolina.
Spin: June did not play in the Bucs' playoff loss to the Giants on Sunday. He's expected to be ready for training camp, but he'll likely miss at least some offseason activity.
 Tue, January 8 | |
Rocky McIntosh , Was LB Archive | ESPN Content Washington Redskins
Questionable | News: McIntosh had successful reconstructive surgery on his left knee and is now expected to be ready at the start of 2008, the Washington Post reports. He finished the season with 87 tackles, three sacks and three forced fumbles in 14 games.
Spin: The initial progonsis had McIntosh missing part of the 2008 season but now it sounds like he may return at the start.
 Tue, January 8 | |
A.J. Schable , Ari RB Archive | ESPN Content Arizona Cardinals
Questionable | News: Schable (fractured foot) signed a two-year deal with the Eagles on Tuesday, the Associated Press reports.
Spin: He'll spend the offseason trying to prove his worth and earn a spot during training camp.
 Tue, January 8 | |
Brent Celek , Phi TE Archive | ESPN Content Philadelphia Eagles
Questionable | News: Celek had successful surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder on Tuesday, the Associated Press reports.
Spin: With L.J. Smith headed towards free agency, Celek will sit atop the depth chart at tight end heading into the spring, although the Eagles could address the position in several different ways well before the start of training camp next summer. Celek finished his rookie season with 16 catches for 178 yards in limited work when Smith was hurt and when he was able to take snaps away from veteran Matt Schobel.
 Tue, January 8 | |
| JANUARY 7 |
Joey Galloway , TB WR Archive | ESPN Content Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Probable | News: Galloway was pulled out of Sunday's Buccaneers-Giants playoff game in the fourth quarter after aggravating a shoulder injury earlier in the game.
Spin: Galloway caught just one pass for nine yards against the Giants and was not effective. However, the shoulder injury reportedly isn't a long-term problem, and Galloway is not expected to miss any offseason workouts as a result.
 Mon, January 7 | |
Michael Vick *, Atl QB Archive | ESPN Content Atlanta Falcons
Out | News: Vick was transferred to a Kansas prison -- specifically, the federal prison camp in Leavenworth -- to serve the rest of his 23-month sentence on a federal dogfighting charge, the Associated Press reports.
Spin: There have been reports that Vick plans to enter a drug treatment program at Leavenworth, and a successful completion of the program could allow him to be released after serving 12 months. Whether he has been accepted into such a program as of now is uncertain though.
 Mon, January 7 | |
| JANUARY 6 |
LenDale White , Ten RB Archive | ESPN Content Tennessee Titans
Probable | News: White had 19 carries for 69 yards in the Titans' loss to the Chargers on Sunday.
Spin: White had a surprisingly good season for the Titans rushing for over 1,100 yards and seven touchdowns in the regular season. Expect White to be ranked in the top-20 of fantasy running backs entering the 2008 season.
 Sun, January 6 | |
| JANUARY 5 |
Ahman Green , Hou RB Archive | ESPN Content Houston Texans
Probable | News: Texans head coach Gary Kubiak is planning on Green (knee) being ready to be a huge factor for the team next season, the Texans' official site reports.
Spin: "We're counting on Ahman coming back and being 100 percent," Kubiak said. "He can be a huge factor for our team when he is. I expect when we get started April 2 he is 100 percent. His teammates, all the guys who have been sitting in this room with him, have been counting on him. Nobody knows that more than him. There are a lot of expectations. There's a lot of ground to make up." Green suffered an early-season knee injury that never got right, so the Texans never gained any consistency in the running game, in terms of who was running the football. At times, Ron Dayne, Samkon Gado, Darius Walker and Adimchinobi Echemandu were among the backs getting carries during the season.
 Sat, January 5 | |
Chris McAlister , Bal CB Archive | ESPN Content Baltimore Ravens
Probable | News: McAlister (knee) recorded 19 tackles and one interception in eight games for the Ravens in 2007.
Spin: McAlister entered the 2007 season as a smart IDP selection after recording six interceptions (two of them going for touchdowns), but the knee strain he suffered in mid-October kept him on the sidelines for the rest of the season. McAlister will enter the 2008 season with less fantasy hype considering his injury, but he's certainly worth the consideration.
 Sat, January 5 | |
| JANUARY 4 |
Troy Polamalu , Pit S Archive | ESPN Content Pittsburgh Steelers
Probable | News: Polamalu (knee) practiced on Friday, leading coach Mike Tomlin to pronounce him as a "game-time decision," ESPN Radio-1250 in Pittsburgh reports.
Spin: It would be really surprising to see Polamalu miss Saturday's game, as he has all offseason to heal from his wounds. Not only that, but it's doubtful that Tomlin would rather see the torched Anthony Smith on the field instead of Polamalu, even if he was playing on one leg.
 Fri, January 4 | |
Kevin Jones *, Det RB Archive | ESPN Content Detroit Lions
Out | News: Jones (torn ACL) underwent surgery on Friday, and now faces 4-to-6 months of rehab, according to Mlive.com.
Spin: Jones should be all set to go by training camp in July, but it will be a long and painful offseason for Jones.
 Fri, January 4 | |
| JANUARY 3 |
Ricky Williams , Mia RB Archive | ESPN Content Miami Dolphins
Probable | News: The Dolphins are renewing Williams' contract for 2008, the Miami Herald reports. Williams is also said to be doing well in his rehab from a torn pectoral muscle, which ended his 2007 season.
Spin: There is obviously inherent risk in counting on Williams, but this is not a bad gamble as he is set to make a reasonable (by NFL standards) $730,000 next season. Having him in the fold gives the team insurance with Ronnie Brown recovering from a torn ACL. Bill Parcells (the Dolphins' new executive vice president of football operations) and Williams may seem like an odd mix, but assuming that the report (which comes via Williams' agent, Leigh Steinberg) is true, it wouldn't be the first time the Big Tuna has taken a chance on a player with baggage.
 Thu, January 3 | |
Roydell Williams , Ten WR Archive | ESPN Content Tennessee Titans
Probable | News: Williams will miss the rest of the season with a broken ankle, the team announced Thursday, ESPN.com reports.
Spin: Williams sustained the injury in Wednesday's practice and was scheduled for surgery Thursday. At the time of the injury, the Titans did not know its severity, but X-rays revealed the fracture. Coach Jeff Fisher said Thursday that Williams was having surgery to repair the bone at the base of the tibia, which will require a plate and screws. Williams tied with fellow wide receiver Justin Gage for the team lead in receptions in 2007, with 55 catches. He had 719 receiving yards and four touchdowns.

Coy Wire , Buf S Archive | ESPN Content Buffalo Bills
Probable | News: Wire will have neck surgery as early as later this week to correct a nerve problem related to the neck stinger he suffered in the Jacksonville game more than a month ago, the Bills' official site reports.
Spin: It was a lost season for the hard-charging Wire, who ended up playing in only seven games due to two pretty nasty injuries, while starting just one. He finished with a disappointing four total tackles and no interceptions.

Cedric Benson , Chi RB Archive | ESPN Content Chicago Bears
Probable | News: In his first comments since fracturing his fibula, Benson promised he could return 100 percent next season, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Spin: In addition, Benson also stated that he doesn't feel a need to assert himself as the Bears' No. 1 running back. "I feel it's established," he said. "I don't feel like I need to prove anything. I know everybody's looking for the big season, and we were coming on strong at the end and still had quite a few more games where we would have had good numbers. I just got sidelined." After undergoing a difficult recovery process this offseason, Benson won't be handed the starting job next year and likely will have to compete with Adrian Peterson and possibly others in training camp.
