Fantasy Football '98 Rules: Draft Methods

Rules Index The draft is the single most important factor for having a successful season. Teams which begin with a strong draft will most likely find themselves in good shape for the remainder of the season. There are three draft options available for Fantasy Football '98: the Multi-List Method, the Single-List Method and the Live Draft Method (described separately). Regardless of the draft method used, each team receives 16 players during the draft, for a total of 160 player in a league.

Multi-List Draft Method
The multi-list draft method is the easiest method to use and has been the primary method for all previous ESPN SportsZone's fantasy games. This is the recommended draft option for first-time Fantasy Football owners. The multi-list draft has owners rank players in each of the ten draft positions (see table below) prior to their draft day. The players on the draft lists are initially listed in descending order from best-to-worst based on a combination of their 1997 statistics and their projected 1998 performance. The preseason draft order is used as a default ranking in cases where a draft form is not submitted by a team at any or all draft positions.

The ten positional categories from which teams draft, the number of players taken per position, and the number of players which should be ranked per position follow:

MULTI-LIST DRAFT RANKINGS
DRAFT POSITION PLAYERS DRAFTED PLAYERS RANKED
AFC QBs110
NFC QBs110
AFC RBs220
NFC RBs220
AFC WRs220
NFC WRs220
Tight Ends220
Kickers220
AFC Defenses110
NFC Defenses110

Each team is given a slot (1-10) prior to the draft. Draft slots determines where each team selects a player at each position and conference relative to the other teams. For example, the team given the number 1 draft position prior to the draft will draft first in AFC QBs, tenth in NFC QBs, and so forth. The table below displays the draft slots and corresponding draft order in each offensive and defensive category.

MULTI-LIST DRAFT ORDER
SLOT AFC QB NFC QB AFC RB NFC RB AFC WR NFC WR TE K AFC D NFC D
1 1 10 6 5 4 7 9 2 8 3
2 2 9 7 4 3 8 10 1 6 5
3 3 8 9 2 5 6 7 4 10 1
4 4 7 8 3 1 10 6 5 9 2
5 5 6 10 1 2 9 8 3 7 4
6 6 5 1 10 9 2 3 8 4 7
7 7 4 3 8 10 1 5 6 2 9
8 8 3 2 9 6 5 4 7 1 10
9 9 2 4 7 8 3 1 10 5 6
10 10 1 5 6 7 4 2 9 3 8

At positions where a second pick is needed, the draft is conducted in reverse order from the first round at that position. For example, if you get first pick at the TE position, you will get the tenth pick at TE in the second round (1st and 20th overall).

Single-List Draft Method
The single-list draft method combines all of the ten ranking categories of the multi-list draft into one comprehensive draft list. By ranking quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, tight ends, kickers, and defenses in the same draft list, the single-list draft method allows team owners to draft the best player available at any given draft spot, regardless of position.

Like the multi-list method, when the draft starts each team is given a draft slot (1-10). At each draft slot, the owner receives the highest ranked player (from his/her personally ranked list) who is still available to be drafted. The order in which team owners draft reverses in each successive round, so that the owner who drafts first in the first round, will draft tenth in the second round, and so on. The same process is used for the live draft, the only difference is that the single-list method is processed by the league office. Each team's initial waiver order works in the inverse of its draft order.

To prevent an owner from getting too many or too few players at a single position, the single-list draft method has maximums and minimums at every position. They are as follows:

SINGLE-LIST DRAFT POSITION MAXIMUMS AND MINIMUMS
POSITION QB RB WR TE
Maximum 3 5 6 2 2 2
Minimum 2 2 2 1 1 1

Note to chat draft participants or outside league commissioners
The single-list draft method makes drafting your pre-determined teams easy. Simply have every team owner place their predrafted players in the top 16 slots, and that's who they will receive as long as it doesn't violate any positional maximums or minimums. Due to risks involved (group must be full, all owners must set their lists properly), these drafters should be aware that their drafts are not sanctioned by the League Office and should be undertaken with the realization that something may go awry.
