IR | News: Whitney will miss between three and five months after undergoing an osteotomy on his left foot on Friday, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports. Spin: "I just couldn't live on one healthy foot anymore, let alone try to skate," Whitney said Thursday. "We've tried everything to avoid surgery because we knew it would mean missing a chunk of the season. But nothing worked." Whitney essentially played the 2007-08 on one foot, as he first noticed the issue back in the 2006-07 playoff against the Ottawa. Still, he refused to use that as an excuse for what he considered a lackluster 40-point campaign. Kris Letang is the likely candidate to join Sergei Gonchar on the blue line as the "off" point man on the Pens' primary power-play unit. If Whitney is able to progress smoothly through his rehab, he could be back on the ice in late November, but the longer end of the early estimates would have him on the shelf until January.
