Spin: The Cubs can't take on the salary demands of Halladay, who is owed $15.75 million for 2010, without moving some payroll of their own and the Jays aren't willing to take Milton Bradley, who is owed $21 million over the next two years, as part of the return package so this trade talk may not have much legs. With Halladay set to test the free agent waters after the 2010 season you can be sure the rebuilding Jays will be looking to deal him this offseason. Cora filed for free agency. Spin: Cora played through torn ligaments in both thumbs, requiring surgery on each before the end of the season. If the Mets were smart they would re-sign him for middle infield depth as he is capable at both spots and solid in the clubhouse. Dessens filed for free agency. Spin: Dessens will look to earn a job out of spring training as bullpen depth. The Giants purchased the contract of Pucetas on Saturday, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Spin: The move adds Pucetas to the team's 40-man roster, which protects him from the upcoming Rule 5 draft. Johnson is not expected to sign a contract extension with the Marlins, the Miami Herald reports. Spin: Johnson wants a four-year extension, but the Marlins offered only three years. "The Marlins sort of knew it was now or never," said Johnson's agent, Matt Sosnick. Johnson has two more years of salary arbitration before he will become a free agent. The Marlins likely will trade him before then if no deal is reached. Ackley work out at second base and then attempt to play there in the minors this coming season, the Seattle Times reports. Spin: Ackley played outfield in college, and the Mariners have also considered moving him to first base. GM Jack Zduriencik called the move to second "an experiment" for now. If Ackley can play second, it gives the Mariners a replacement should they decide to deal Jose Lopez at some point. Qualls (knee) was removed from the 60-day DL on Friday. Spin: He's supposed to be back at full strength in time for the start of spring training, but the D-Backs haven't provided any updates about his health since the end of the regular season. Strasburg's knee injury is officially a patellar subluxation of the left knee, the Washington Post reports. Spin: For those of you without medical degrees, that's a dislocated kneecap. "It was the best result that we could have hoped for," General Manager Mike Rizzo said Friday evening from his office at Nationals Park. "It's something where he just has to rest and follow a physical therapy regimen to strengthen all the ligaments around his knee. We think we dodged a bullet. From what you hear, and from what [witnesses] saw on the field, you always think of the worst and hope for the best." His AFL stint is done, but he'll have plenty of time to get healed up and ready for spring training. League Tools
