Spin: With Mark Teahen moving into the third-base spot and Gordon Beckham playing second, the White Sox needed a versatile veteran defender capable of playing all of the infield spots. Having a veteran of Vizquel's caliber around as a mentor should also help Alexei Ramirez with his glove at shortstop as well. The Marlins added Ceda (shoulder) to their 40-man roster, the Marlins' official site reports. Spin: Ceda missed the entire 2009 season with a torn labrum. He was expected to compete for a spot in the back end of the Marlins' bullpen after arriving for Kevin Gregg last offseason. Drew is expected to be ready for the start of spring training after undergoing minor shoulder surgery on Thursday, the Boston Globe reports. Spin: "I got that [cortisone] injection right before the playoffs, which helped a little bit but didn't help a whole lot," Drew said. "Then I went into the offseason and the last couple of weeks it's just been wearing me out. Nagging, achy, and every time I reach across to grab something it was really weak. So I flew into Boston Wednesday to get an MRI to see what was going on." The Red Sox's opt-out clause on Drew isn't going to be exercised for 2010, so assuming that he's healthy when spring training begins in February, look for him to continue in his role as the team's right fielder in 2010. Johnson is unlikely to re-sign with the Marlins, assuming he draws interest elsewhere in free agency, the Marlins' official site reports. Spin: Johnson made $5.5 million last season and presumably will be able to fetch somewhere in that neighborhood on the open market, which likely cancels out the Marlins' chances of landing him. Calero was among the Marlins to file for free agency, the Marlins' official site reports. Spin: Calero will be difficult for the Marlins to re-sign, after a successful season on the cheap - he made just $500,000 last season. He's a Type B free agent, meaning that the Fish at least will be able to get draft pick compensation if they offer arbitration. The Rockies have expressed interest in free-agent catcher Brian Schneider, Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports. Spin: Schneider would slot in as a backup behind Chris Iannetta in 2010, but it's unclear if Iannetta is ready to handle full time catching, and the Rockies may need a more powerful option. McPherson has signed a minor league deal with Oakland. Spin: The A's have invited him to spring training to be a part of their competition for the starting job at third base. Health has been McPherson's biggest hurdle in recent seasons, but he could be a low-cost stopgap for the A's if they decide that top prospect Brett Wallace isn't quite ready for the job by Opening Day. McPherson missed the entire 2009 season with back trouble, so it remains to be seen if he'll be able to offer the A's anything this time around. Cabrera was waived by the Red Sox and subsequently filed for free agency. Spin: Cabrera long ago looked like a closer in waiting for the Indians, but he took a wrong turn following the first WBC and now is a fringe major league reliever. League Tools
