Howard belted his 16th home run of the season Sunday against the Diamondbacks, a two-run shot in the first inning off Vidal Nuno. He went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs in the contest.
Howard went 2-for-5 with a walk and two strikeouts in his return to the lineup Saturday.
GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said the Phillies have not discussed releasing Howard in the offseason, the team's official site reports. "I fully expect him to be our first baseman next year," Amaro said. "I don't know where people are coming up with him not having a future with us. He's a very big part of our organization."
Howard will likely get the nod Saturday since the Phillies will face a right-handed pitcher in the form of Josh Collmenter, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia reports.
Howard is out of the Phillies' lineup Friday for a third straight day, Stephen Gross of the Morning Call reports.
Manager Ryne Sandberg confirmed Thursday that Howard would be used in a platoon with Darin Ruf at first base, CSN Philly reports. "I look at it as a scenario where against some left-handed pitchers it could be a platoon situation going forward, depending on the numbers," Sandberg said.
Howard is not in the lineup Thursday against the Giants.
