Manager Ryne Sandberg confirmed Thursday that Howard would be used in a platoon with Darin Ruf at first base, CSN Philly reports. "I look at it as a scenario where against some left-handed pitchers it could be a platoon situation going forward, depending on the numbers," he said.
Howard is not in the lineup Thursday against the Giants.

Howard has made an adjustment to his hitting mechanics by lowering his hands while in his batting stance, CSN Philly reports. "I'm just working on trying to get my hands in a good slot, get my hands in the zone quicker," Howard said. "If I can get my hands in the that slot or find that happy place then we'll be able to do some damage."
Howard is out of the lineup Sunday against the Pirates.
Howard went 1-for-3 batting out of the five-hole in Wednesday's loss to the Marlins.
