Hughes developed an issue with the fingernail on his right index finger during Tuesday's start which limited the use of his curveball, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. "I always cut my nail before a start," Hughes said. "If my index fingernail gets too long, I can't spike the curveball. I have to make sure it's pretty short. I just cut it too short, and the skin just peeled back a little bit on the other side of it. It didn't spring up until the fifth inning."
Hughes gave up four earned runs on eight hits and one walk with seven strikeouts in five innings Tuesday against the Blue Jays.
